Advantages of CO2 Cannabinoid Extraction Equipment

The Apeks machine uses CO2 as the solvent to extract the oils from the cannabis plant.  The new technology uses approximately 2-lb of carbon dioxide, runs off 110-volts, is closed loop (recovers the CO2 after use) and is fully automated.  It’s also incredibly easy to use - simply fill the extractor with plant material, press start and remove the extracted oil. 

The system has its own electric high pressure CO2 pump and temperature control unit, both of which are designed to run off standard 110-volt circuits. The 1500-1L Benchtop uses the Valveless Expansion Technology (VET) also developed by Apeks. VET uses a proprietary decompression mechanism for separation of the extracted oils from the liquid CO2 stream – extracted oils have no constrictions and no let down valves to cause clogging in the system during operation.

CO2 oil extraction has several advantages over other methods:

  • CO2 is non-toxic and is Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food products. Other extraction solvents, such as hydrocarbon based propellants like propane and butane, hexane and pentane, or ethanol/alcohol mixtures require additional processing beyond the extraction process in order to ensure the product is safe for consumption. With CO2 oil extraction, no toxins, heavy metals or hydrocarbon materials come in contact with the extracted oils.  The spent material is also free of residual contaminates so it can be re-used as well.

  • CO2 is non-flammable. It does not require costly explosion proof facilities.

  • CO2 is “cold” – Cannabis oil extractions can be done at temperatures that are native to the plant, minimizing thermal degradation of the plant material and the extracted oil.

  • CO2 is “tunable” – the solvency power of CO2 can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing pressures and/or temperatures.  

  • CO2 is inexpensive and readily available. Apeks’ production CO2 oil extraction systems recirculate and subsequently recover 95% of the CO2 used in each extraction.

  • CO2 is environmentally friendly. It does not contribute to the overall atmospheric CO2 levels.

Cannabinoid extraction uses biopharmaceuticals equipment (often abbreviated BPE).  There are codes and regulations regarding how BPE must be manufactured, tested and cleaned. The cleaning is not just a process—it is a necessity in order for you to consistently produce high quality oil. Cleaning must be designed into the machine. 

Many extraction systems on the market have sealed solvent storage tanks—this is a major design flaw. The solvent never gives up 100 percent of the oil it extracted. The residual oil left in the solvent is typically referred to as carryover.  The sealed storage vessels build up a layer of carryover oils on the inside walls that looks similar to slow rotting vegetation.  If you are unable to scrub and clean the inside of every pipe, valve, and vessel on your system, in time, the product that you are selling will contain rancid remains of previous extractions.
